This is a picture I took myself when I was doing some urban exploration in Melbourne. The meaning behind this one is pretty straight forward; Drug addiction is an intense roller coaster, there are highs and lows but eventually it leads to crashing down and burning out.

Helvetica

Helvetica is often said to be the most used font in the world, and I can actually see that now after watching the documentary. Several countries use it as the font for all road markings, companies such as Apple Inc. use it on all their products, as does McDonalds for it’s logo. In all honest I can see why, it’s a clean and sleek font, easy to read and it complements nearly everything it is printed on well, from corporate business cards to consumer electronics, it carries a great amount of sophistication and class with the rounded edges and often white colour overlay.

Automatic Writing

There once was an elephant with shoes on his face his mind was full of candy and his body with verbs as he one day ran on a lake of paper which gave him hepatitis as he ate avocado televisions.

Sometimes Charley the clown smokes trees while touching a brick statue at the same time Charley noticed today is an odd word as it means plastic beaches have to be kept free of pygmy marmosets in order to produce cardboard boxes in the wind.

Devin cheese can make for a good fuel alternative due to the high amount of Gremlins in the container a rocket ship flew all the way to my house powered only by hopes dreams and a large amount of high octane petrol quite an amazing feat as Stallin forbade people from sending letters to his mother asking for cake, as this pissed him off more than four lions in a washing machine he immediately enacted the Jack Nicolson policy that demanded everyone become a psychopath and murder their family with an axe which was the reason the first season of seinfeld was so bad.

There was a racist law which said there are no lawn errors allowed in the Kennel when the kiln was on. Hence Charles said “Shit, How was I to know? That law is crap, I will risk it.” Charles then shat on one car before his character began to ache and he let Lawrence eat his ass. “This doesn’t work!” Lawrence said while he ate his rear, “How will I, a wretch, allow you to share a shower?” Since before Lawrence was a whore he knew how to wear Charles like a sock puppet. Because of this Lawrence takes care when in the shower, or he’ll have fingers in his ass. Lawrence wanks once then before he could think, Charles walks in and shat on Lawrence’s chest.

Week 4 Task

The following is dialogue I wrote for the Nighthawks Cafe painting:

Exercise 1

Jack the Waiter: Another round?

Frank: No, I should probably head off soon, it’s getting late.

Jack: That’s fair enough, I was planning on shutting up shop as soon as these two kids over here left

Frank: Hmm, she looks familiar. Where have I seen her before?

Jack: Probably the house down the street.

Frank: She lives locally?

Jack: Not exactly, she works, down the street, at the busy house.

Frank: You’re saying she’s?

Jack: Yep. She’s an “Entertainer”.

Frank: Poor bastard, think he knows?

Jack: By the way he’s talking, I doubt it. He was about to pop the question before by the way he was getting all emotional

Frank: Hahahahahaha. Poor bastard, boy will he get a surprise when he finds out.

Jack: Remind me to bring the camera if that ever happens.

Frank: I’ll bring mine too, I wonder if he’s paying for her or not?

Jack: He shouted her a meal, I don’t think he’s bedded her yet though.

Frank: She’ll probably tell him the fee right after he has undressed. Good luck getting your camera on that one.

Jack: Won’t be the first time I’ve taken pictures through a bedroom window.

Frank: Jack, you disgust me some times, you know that?

Jack: Oh come on! I’ve done worse than that!

Frank: I know. Don’t remind me. I bailed your ass out of jail that one time remember.

Jack: You’re still holding the grudge? Just because breeze blew all my clothes off while I was down Main Avenue.

Frank: You were inside your house, removed your clothes of your own volition, left your house, while still naked, then proceeded to do cartwheel around central park.

Jack: And you can honestly say you have never done that?

Frank: … Alright, you’ve got me there.

Jack: How much did that glass house cost you? Because it’s pretty stupid throwing stones in it.

Frank: Kiss my ass, why do I even come to this diner anyway?

Jack: Because it’s the only diner in town that you won’t violate a restraining order by entering.

Frank: Oh here we go.

Jack: No, seriously, you call me a pervert, but at least I didn’t do evil things in the coffee pot at the Chop Suey.

Betty: Excuse me sirs could you.

Frank and Jack: You stay out of this

Richard: Hey! That’s no way to talk to my lady

Frank: Oh please, she’s your lady, my lady, and about 20 other people

Richard: What are you saying?

Frank: She’s an escort, a hooker, a prostitute

Jack: Damn it, where’s my camera.

Richard: Alright! You and me! Outside! Right now!

Meanwhile, this is for Exercise 2

This movie is so drab and boring. The same slapstick, man falls over, everyone laughs routine that has played every night for the past 4 weeks. When will the film industry take a risk? Show something controversial such as a movie that empathizes with the killer, the horrors of war. Instead we are regulated by a group of G men who decide what we are allowed to watch. Such a boring and restricted lifestyle that is, if I were a director I would face ridicule and persecution willingly if it was what I truly believed in.

Credit sequences

Ed Wood

The film itself is presented in black and white as that was the era that Ed Wood created his filmography, accompanied by an eerie science fiction sound score which was also signature of his genre. After a lighting strike the film shows a house in a storm, the music still playing in the background, upon entering a coffin swings open and a man inside explains a brief synopsis of the film, before the title sequence resumes and the cast and crew names are shown as lighting crashes about the screen. The first 4 or so names are white text on a black background, before the credit sequence shifts into a mock graveyard, complete with the names carved in a serif font onto the obviously fake tomb stones. After going under water, one of the names begins to warp and bend as if it had gone under water with the camera. After rising back to the surface there appears to be a giant tentacle attacking stereotypical alien space ships which is a homage to the Z-Movie quality that Ed Wood became famous for. The final segment shows the Hollywood sign, before tracking outward and showing a small theatre in Hollywood where Ed is directing a production.

 

Girl with the dragon tattoo

The credit sequence was done by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame. This piece is very signature of his works as there is a lot of fast editing, a lot of hidden symbolism, it’s violent and it’s dark. The sequence begins with a strobe effect timed to the drum track of the piece, the vocals begin to kick in and the fast paced editing begins. Throughout the piece the names of people attached to the project are shown in more subtle area’s of the screen as if they are not the main focus of the attention but instead the action of this piece is. Various moments show people being bound and gagged, beaten, set alight or attacked by computer cables. While this may seem random there is relation to the film, such as the binding/gagging is alluding to the moment where Lizbeth Salander is sexually abused by her government assigned mentor. Or the person being set alight could be Martin after he crashes his car fleeing the island. Both of which are major events in the film, which is interesting as this credit sequence seems to be aimed at those who have seen the movie multiple times and are rewatching for analytical purposes, which is similar to other works that Trent Reznor has done in the past, such as Year Zero or Broken, where he created symbolism that people had to analyse to fully understand the works. Another symbol that was present in both the American and German versions of the film is the atrocities caused by men, such as what Martin does to women, including his sister, which is expressed through the hands caressing Lizbeth’s face various times through the piece before dragging her down into the darkness. The sequence is very rapid and it requires a few viewings to fully understand everything that is taking place in the three minutes of credit sequence.

 

Se7en

Much like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Se7en has a lot of fore references to later moments in the film, as well as a frantic editing style that, while jarring, has a lot of meaning behind it. The first thing we see is that the visual quality of this part of the film is very washed out and yellow, as if from a poorly maintained photograph or film. The cast and crew names that appear are all in a white, jagged font that constantly jitters about the screen. Throughout the segment a slightly recognisable version of Closer by Nine Inch Nails plays (Trent Reznor would sign on for other David Fincher films such as the Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon tattoo), which is ironic because the song Closer is very disturbing in itself and fits well with the imagery of this title sequence. The editing of this scene shows a number of different rituals that John Doe does, such as removing his finger prints using a razor blade, keeping a daily diary of all the mundane instances that he encounters, writing in great detail his thoughts, or drawing over the photos of his victims.

 

Gold Finger

The title sequence to Goldfinger is iconic of Bond films, showing scenes from the film, along with the various women and having it accompanied by a catchy soundtrack. This is an interesting sequence as several scenes are projected onto a woman coated in gold. The scenes are various important moment but the most significant addition is the woman whom is being projected onto as a woman in the film turns up dead after being coated in gold.

What is in my home.

Above is an image from the storage room at my house, next to the garage. It feels unhomely because at every time of the year it feels cold and lonely. The room feels sound proof as people outside speaking of the room seem to fade away. The room is cluttered and messy, having everything from filing cabinets full of tax records, coolers, speakers, camping equipment and a shotgun shell reloader.

The eclectic array of different items makes it feel rather unkempt and unorganised and gives no unified feeling to the room, everything is from what should feel like a different room, the speakers were from our lounge room, as were the magazines on the middle shelf. THe Coolers were from our shed, the filing cabinet from our study.

That is why this room feels unhomely.

Exit through the gift shop

Exit through the Gift shop in an interesting look at the world of street art and the exploits of Banksy and Mr Brain-wash, whom many have theorized are in a feud or in fact the same person. Banksy is perhaps the most famous street artist in the world due to his works on the Tottenham wall in Iran, his memorable imagery and his political statements which he refuses to censor. In my opinion Banksy is very deserving of the praise he has received, his pieces have an abundance of detail and a narrative to go along with the creations.

Cut-up

During the cut up exercise our class was interrupted by a fire alarm going off, so I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but I got about half a page.
